Reel to reel

 Webmaster's note:

The information in the liner notes on the back of the LP cover sleeve has a number of points that are incorrect. As far as we know Turina never composed a Sonatina in D minor, he composed a "Sonata in D minor, Op. 61". Julian Bream did record the entire "Sonata in D minor, Op. 61" for a BBC broadcast during the same period of time he was recording the Spanish Guitar Music: Turina, de Falla, Sor album for Westminster in 1956. Those recordings of the Sonata can be found on the BBC Julian Bream Testament CD, Guitar Recital: Bach, Sor, Turina, Tippett, Schubert (2005). He likely recorded the "Sonata in D minor, Op.61" for the Westminster label in addition to all the other Turina compositions recorded but then likely only included the "Andante" movement due to the space limitations of vinyl. In all the years that Bream's Westminster catalogue has been reissued, especially once CDs were developed, the other movements from the "Sonata in D minor, Op. 61" have not surfaced as an outtake so it most likely no longer exists if it ever did. Luckily we have it in the amazing Testament CD collection recorded in the same year. It has the same youthful enthusiasm that is evident throughout all of his Westminster recordings.

There appear to have been more errors in the track listing of the album in question as there are some early US Spanish Guitar Music LP jackets available on eBay with a cardboard cut-out pasted over the track listing on side one. A picture is available just above the "Webmaster's note" section. The error underneath is unknown.

Other errors found in the liner notes are in the musician's biography paragraph. While Dr Boris Perott (not D. Perrot) did start teaching Julian in 1945, Julian did not meet Segovia until December 1947. Additionally, Julian's first London recital was actually at Alliance Hall in July 1948 and it was not till 1950 that he made his second London appearance at Cowdray Hall. The Artist section of the liner notes was provided by the Westminster editorial staff unlike the liner notes on the music and composers which was written by Sam Morgenstern.

SPANISH GUITAR MUSIC: TURINA, DE FALLA, SOR (compilation)
Westminster/Deutsche Grammophon 5177848 - mono. November 2001
While this CD has a similar album cover to the prior LP Spanish Guitar Music: Turina, de Falla, Sor, it actually contains his first two LP recordings for the Westminster label of composers in the Spanish style: Spanish Guitar Music: Turina, de Falla, Sor and Guitar Music of Villa-Lobos and Tórroba. The cover title is misleading as to its content by excluding the composers Villa-Lobos and Tórroba featured in Guitar Music of Villa-Lobos and Tórroba. Note: due to space limitations of trying to fit 2 LP albums on one CD, two Tórroba pieces were omitted - "Sonatina in A major- 1. Allegretto" and "Nocturno in A minor" and Turina's "Sonata in D minor, Op. 61 - Andante".
