Disc 1 was comprised of newly recorded material while Disc 2 is a compilation of material found on earlier album releases. Aside from the Tárrega selections, all the other selections on Disc 2 had appeared on earlier albums in the "Music of Spain" series. The Tárrega selections were recorded during the "Music of Spain" period and meant to be on one of the "Music of Spain" series LPs that never saw the light of day at that time in the mid-1980s. These leftover recordings, along with some new ones, were eventually released in a formal album called La Guitarra Romantica, after the release of the ¡Guitarra! The Guitar in Spain LP. This marks the first and only time that a Julian Bream compilation is released with the addition of newly recorded selections. The inclusion of new tracks in a compilation album such as "Greatest Hits" and "Best of" collections are commonly seen today as an effective marketing tool but it was nearly unheard of in the early days of the classical genre.

The ¡Guitarra! The Guitar in Spain LP release was likely the first to see a CD release during the same period of time.

While this CD has a similar album cover to the prior LP Spanish Guitar Music, it contains his first two recordings for the Westminster label of composers in the Spanish style: Spanish Guitar Music and Guitar Music of Villa-Lobos and Tórroba. Like many other compilations that include the entire Spanish Guitar Music: Turina, de Falla, Sor album, they always inadvertently leave out Turina's "Sonata in D minor, Op. 61 - Andante". Another common error is that they will merge the title "Sonata in D minor . Op 61" with the following Turina composition "Ráfage, Op. 53" like in this compilation. "Sonata in D minor Op, 61 - Ráfaga, Op. 53" is incorrect! I actually corrected the track listing above with added notations for clarification. When the Sonata is actually included in the compilation, they will often incorrectly call it a Sonatina instead of a Sonata. The correct title is "Sonata in D minor, Op. 61". There are three movements to this sonata but only the "Andante" was originally included in the vinyl LP. To hear Julian Bream play the entire Turina Sonata in 1956 (as he would have played it had he recorded the whole sonata for this album), listen to the BBC recording for radio broadcast. The recording, along with several other Julian Bream broadcast for the BBC, was released on the Testament label in 2005.

This compilation includes all the selection from An Anthology of English Song, vol. 1 (LW 5243, 1956) except for Morley's "Come, sorrow, come" and Dowland's " In darkness let me dwell". This compilation also includes many selections from the other Pears/Bream Decca LP A Recital of Lute Songs (LXT 5567, 1960). The songs omitted are Morley's "With my love, my life was nestled", Rosseter's "Whether men do laugh or weep" and the anonymous composition "Have you seen but a white lily grow". Additionally, this CD collection includes numerous selections that do NOT include Julian Bream. Benjamin Britten accompanies Peter Pears on the piano in these selections. These Britten/Pears selections were initially released on a 10" LP album called Twentieth Century English Songs - An Anthology of English Song, Vol. 3 on Decca (LW 5241, 1956). These Pears and Britten selections were also on the second side of a 12" LP compilation called An English Song Recital. This same LP compilation had all of the selections of Pears and Bream from Elizabethan Lute Songs - Vol. 1 of An Anthology of English Song, vol. 1 (LW 5243, 1956) on the first side of the LP.

This page consists of all the Julian Bream compact discs compilations that have been released since the mid-1980s. Initially, Julian Bream's first CD compilation release was a companion to the LP release of the same name ¡Guitarra! The Guitar in Spain. This CD, like the LP, was a hybrid of newly released recordings along with a compilation of recordings from the recent past in the "Music of Spain" series. Since then the compilation albums have gone in all directions. Some, I think Mr. Bream would be satisfied with the release and others I think would give him complete dissatisfaction. Early on, the compilations were primarily placing 2 full LPs that had long been out of print on 1 CD. At times, if there was a space limitation, 1 or 2 of the tracts from either album would be omitted. One good example would be the Westminster compilation release Spanish Guitar Music: Turina, de Falla, Sor. Sometimes if there was space remaining on the CD, they would fill it up with other content that had some link to Julian Bream. A great example would be another Westminster release Julian Bream Plays Dowland and Bach where Ayres for 4 Voices by the Golden Age Singers is included (Bream accompanies them on lute on these selections). There were also several good CD compilations that brought together Bream's recordings of one composer from different LPs into one CD. A good example would be Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez; Fantasia para un Gentilhombre. Most of the Rodrigo compositions that Bream has ever recorded were represented on this CD. Bream did record the "Aranjuez" 3 different times for an LP release during his 40-year tenure at RCA and whether they used the version that the listener or Bream preferred the most is a different topic altogether. Other compilations went in directions that I am almost positive Julian Bream would not approve of. The Bream Adagios and The Ultimate Guitar Collection, vol. 1 and 2 are great examples of how he would not like you to appreciate his music. The concertos and suites are dismembered beyond recognition and the sequence of the material is typical of what you would see with a greatest hits pop album. Finally, when the artwork displays a steel-string guitar or a pic wedged in the strings, you know someone did not do their homework. Luckily, our faith has been restored that there is someone with artistic sense once again at RCA. While it may not be in everybody's budget to buy a box set over $100.00, the last compilation box set released is magnificent.
